The Knightsbridge team crafted the sale of a popular beer brand…

2017-founded Anglesey Ales is craft beer brewery based in its namesake, best known for its popular and award-winning brand ‘Anglesey Brewhouse’, sold directly from the brewery and in shops across North Wales.

Husband-and-wife team Phil and Karen Chadwick formed the business after initially testing with their home brew equipment and incorporating the business name in 2014.

With their beer proving to be popular, they relocated to larger premises in 2019, a 10-barrel purpose-built brewhouse. In 2021, their signature selection of 440ml cans was launched.

Looking to cash in to facilitate their retirements, the Chadwicks reached out to Knightsbridge for help, who deployed Commercial Executive Helen Bainbridge to lead the sale.

Key off-the-bat value drivers presented to potential buyers included the brand’s strong social media following and 4.9-star Google reviews rating.

Other key appeals are its glowing reputation for producing some of the highest quality beer in the region, which is a tourist-heavy location receiving 1.7 million visitors per annum.

In what proved to be a team effort from Knightsbridge, Regional Commercial Director Chris Darroux and Research Analyst Lauren Kirkwood drummed up the interest of 16 serious candidates.

The scope for expansion of the building and equipment proved to be a key value driver, along with the company’s scope for increased turnover by resuming tours of the brewery, which includes a bar and gift shop.

Further business growth could also be encouraged by selling through the hospitality and trade sector, as well as the wholesale trade sector, which could see Anglesey Brewhouse expand across the UK.

The successful acquirer was found through a crossmatch sent out by Anastasia Soldatos, Knightsbridge Administrator, and the deal was wrapped up within eight months of going live on the market.

The buyer: Northampton-based Cadman Capital Group, an independent private equity investment firm founded by Giles Cadman in 2001. The acquisition was headed by John Percival, the Group’s CFO and Head of Portfolio (UK).

Cadman’s CEO, James Dinsdale, commented: “We’re excited to welcome Anglesey Ales to the group, as we believe they will bring fresh perspectives to our already diverse beverage portfolio.

“The combination of Anglesey’s distinctive craft style and Conwy’s traditional brewing heritage allows us to serve a wider range of customers across Wales.”

Anglesey Ales will remain a local brewery but will benefit from the support and investment of its new proprietors.

The Anglesey Brewhouse brand fits Cadman’s acquisition strategy, slotting the fast-growing brewery into its food and beverages companies portfolio – a branch of the Group’s active ownership.

The Knightsbridge team wishes the Chadwicks happy retirements together, and the best of luck for the future of Anglesey Ales and Cadman Capital Group alike. Salud!
